During pregnancy, some expecting parents reflect on their own childhood experiences of being parented.
A famous 1975 journal article (written by Fraiberg, Adelson and Shapiro) called “Ghosts in the Nursery” describes how new parents often without knowing repeat patterns of parenting from their childhood- so that’s all the good parts, and unfortunately all the not so good parts.
The good news is that through reflecting on your good and not so good experiences of being parented; and thinking about how it will influence the way that you parent and nurture your children; it can help to break this cycle. It will give you choices about whether to continue the good or not so good ways of parenting- choices that your parents may not have had.
